Sometimes there’s more to a bake than just the end product….
Bowling cake
My son Max was into bowling at a very young age. I bought a sphere cake pan and while it made an excellent round bowling ball, the weight of the cake ball made a crater in the sheet cake. If I were to do it again, I would use hallow chocolate or rice krispies for the ball.
Spider cupcakes
I owe most of the success of these funny little critters to the kit. The legs and eyes really do it for the effect.
The real scary part of these decadent arachnids is the amazing Hershey Chocolate cake and frosting recipe. It’s been my go-to for a very long time!
Minecraft zombie creeper
The first time my son Max told me about the creepers, I panicked. I thought he meant there was some random adult hanging out at his school playground who they nicknamed The Creeper. I realized soon after that it was a character from the very popular pixelated game Minecraft.
Then, when I asked him what he wanted for his birthday cake, he unhesitatingly said, “Zombie Creeper”.
Ooooookay….
I spent weeks coloring and forming various green squares. Suddenly, our oven died! Thank goodness for the QFC Bakery department. They graciously let me buy an unfrosted vanilla sheet cake and the rest is minecraft history!
Frozen cake
Don’t be fooled, I didn’t make three enormous tiers for one little girl….I only made two. That bottom one, it’s just the cake pan covered in fondant. Frugality FTW!
This was the first time I attempted candy and thank goodness it had to look like shards of glass because if I had to cut it in any non-shard shape, it would have been a disaster!
I also used some cute cookie cutouts for the fondant snowflakes (and chocolates next to the cake). This one is one of my favorites.
Harry potter quidditch cake
This is the first of two Harry Potter cakes that were requested by my children. I’m not feeling the love for this quidditch pitch….the groundskeeper was a little heavy handed with the landscaping tiller (see field right).
The bigger fail here is the fact that after finishing the cake the evening before the party and going to bed, I woke up with a stomach bug that forced me to rely on good friends and a better husband to get through the party.
And no, I did not serve the cake….
Harry potter cake part 2
This is the second of the two Harry Potter cakes. This one was for my daughter, Maddy. I attempted to create some of the more difficult items out of rice krispies. As you can see, I need more practice.
I’m very happy with the Whomping Willow, though. That adorable little muggle car and the dusting of snow makes me squeal with delight!
Hagrid’s hut is substantial compared to Hogwarts…but let’s just call that perspective, shall we?
The face of murder
This was a cake requested by a friend who, when confronted with this monstrosity, kindly said it was perfect and paid. God bless Jenny!
The example I had to work from was of a sweet-faced, kitten with big, sad eyes. I’m not sure if it’s the freakishly bright pink, the awkwardly thick and shiny whiskers, or the oddly-placed Swedish fish (he’s supposed to be eating it), but I feel very threatened every time I see this picture.
Nice demon kitty……
Springtime in sugar
It was these cupcakes that launched my decision to try and do this as a business. I had such fun making these floral cupcakes in little terra cotta pots and the responses I got from the church ladies filled my head with pride.
